Nathan & Michelle Long
We are Nathan and Michelle Long. We call ourselves ‘oil field brats’ since we ended up in Casper, WY during the 80s when Casper was a boom, then a bust town. As in many couples’ stories, our worlds had crossed a number of times, but didn’t collide until ‘it was meant to be’. When we were young, about 6 and 10, we took piano lessons from the same lady, but didn’t know it until we were dating and talking about our pasts. We dove into my parents’ photo albums and came across a picture of us taken around 1988 during a piano recital. There we stood staring at a photo taken 18 years earlier looking at our younger selves and wondering how we had never met before we did!
It was March 25, 2006 when we both made our separate ways to Gillette, WY to attend a concert with what we’d find out were mutual friends. I, Michelle, had heard about this “Nate guy” - how great of a snowboarder he was, and how much he had traveled, and how nice he was, but had yet to meet him. When my friend who knew him introduced us, my first thought was “He’s tall. I like that.”
We spent the evening enjoying the music together and then talking after the show before departing to drive south to Casper. I remember I had a touch of a cold and my voice was not working well. Just north of town, Nathan pulled his car over and my friend, driving her car, pulled over to see if they needed help. Nate was just saying goodbye again. I recall attempting to say goodbye and my voice sounded horrible! I was so embarrassed! I thought he would never want to talk to me again. I was very wrong. Over the next couple of weeks, he showed up at my work to say hello, got others together often so we would end up hanging out, and instant messaged me as often as possible. (This was before texting became the number one way to communicate…)
Eventually, we went on our real first date which was a hike at the west end of Casper Mountain. I think we ended up spending half a day together and didn’t want to part ways. We became inseparable very quickly. We spent time with each others’ families and friends or found ourselves alone on a bench in a park just talking for hours. Nate’s Shadow dog was with us also and he became the ring bearer at our wedding which took place on August 19, 2006, less than 5 months after we met.
Twelve+ years later, we have 4 children, another dog, have been through loss and gain of friends and family members and wouldn’t ask for any one else to be by our side through it all. We believe God’s timing brought us together at that concert and we continue to trust His will in our lives as we grow as a couple and parents.
We are excited to dance the night away at this year's Butterfly Ball Prom, hopefully as King and Queen.
