Childhood Cancer Statistics

Childhood cancer is a monster that doesn't discriminate based on race, religion, wealth, or any other factor. Here are some statistics on the prevalence of childhood cancer and why it is so important to have more funding.

Childhood Cancer Statistics
  • Childhood cancer is the number one cause of death by disease in children
  • 1 in 300 boys and 1 in 333 girls will be diagnosed with cancer before their 20th birthdayThere are 263,000 new cases of cancer in children under the age of 20 each year worldwide
  • 250 children die every single day across the world from cancer, that is 91,250 deaths from childhood cancer every single yearIn the U.S. 13,400 children are diagnosed with cancer every year. That's 46 kids diagnosed every single day.
  • In the U.S. 7 children die every day from cancer. Or 2,555 deaths each year in the U.S. alone.

Childhood Brain Cancer Statistics
  • 3 of the 7 children that die every day in the U.S., die from brain cancer
  • Brain cancer is the second most common type of childhood cancer, second only to Leukemia
  • Brain cancer is the leading cause of death by cancer in children

But Despite These Statistics, Childhood Cancer Remains Underfunded...
  • Despite these statistics, childhood cancer only receives 3.8% of the total funding from the National Cancer Institute.
  • And there have only been 2 new drugs in the last 20 years that have been developed specifically for children.
  • The children that do survive childhood cancer are usually riddled with long lasting side effects from their treatments, including developmental delays, heart problems, hearing loss, secondary cancers, loss of eyesight, and neurological problems.
