Paytyn Squire's Story
Paytyn Squires was diagnosed in March 2013 with DIPG. It's an incurable, inoperable brain tumor. For most kids this comes with a prognosis of death within 6-12 months. After battling very hard for his life for nearly two years Paytyn passed away on December 9, 2014. Throughout his battle, Paytyn endured chemo every other week and was on daily medication for nerve pain. He gained 30+ pounds from the steroids to help with swelling. Paytyn also endured surgery to remove the tumor from his spine, had a shunt placed in his head to relieve pressure and a port placed in his chest.
He was perfectly healthy before he started getting headaches, knee pain, began vomiting and had personality changes. For 3 or 4 months his parents took him to the doctors over and over, and they would send him home, saying he had a sinus infection and growing pains. His mother finally took him to the E.R where they performed a CT scan and blood tests, which all came back clear, but his heart rate was unusually slow. |
The next day they took him to the childrens hospital in Salt Lake City, UT and they sent him home after a bag of fluids saying his heart rate was low but he was just dehydrated. That night his pain was uncontrollable and his parents took him back to children's hospital where they did an MRI and found a mass on his brain and spine.
This family’s life will never be the same and they learned to live in the present and to be so thankful for every minute of every day they had with him. Paytyn was so strong and never fails at bringing joy to his parents lives. No child should ever have to go through what these kids are! We need more for our babies!
